I translated one of Ms. Yurari's comics, "Kuma-san's CFS Diary【Diagnosis】!" I would like to share it here on my blog.

I will write about my personal experiences similar to Kuma-san's as an ME/CFS patient this time too, so I would be happy if you read it!

In My Case |

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis[ME](a.k.a. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome[CFS]) is currently considered as an incurable disease. However, I felt relieved when I was diagnosed with this illness just like Kuma-san. I know it might sound strange to you, so let me explain why.

I was only 10 when I contracted ME/CFS followed by a flu infection. It took some 21 years to finally receive a diagnosis of ME/CFS because there were and still are few doctors that can diagnose this illness in Japan.

I have been to the pediatrician, physician, neurologist and psychiatrist, but all of them told me that it was all in my head.

The symptoms of ME/CFS are so intense that “hypochondria” or “anxiety” can never ever explain why you are suffering from such strong pain and discomfort. You have headaches, stomach aches, a ringing in your ears, feeling nauseated 24/7, 365 days a year. And your disrupted immune system causes you to have a high fever. In addition, your mental, physical and muscular strengths seriously deteriorate, affecting every single aspect of your life.

I have been told my symptoms were because of hypochondria by all doctors that I met, so I gave up on receiving treatment or a diagnosis at some point.

It was my friend that suspected ME/CFS was the cause of my health problems. I was utterly surprised because I did not expect that the word, ME/CFS, would come out from a friend who was completely healthy. At the same time, she made me realize that this illness really existed out there in the world.

If it hadn't been for her, I would not have even started searching for a way to receive treatment or a diagnosis.

On the next day, I started searching for a doctor specializing in chronic illnesses.

It took no time until I realized how difficult it was to find useful information on ME/CFS. Although a vast amount of information is readily available online in this IT era, information on ME/CFS was an exception. I found few blogs or websites about first-hand experiences of ME/CFS patients. Due to the characteristics of ME/CFS, its patients cannot write a blog or run a website no matter how much they wish to do so. The majority of us simply do not have mental or physical strength.

For these reasons above, I started searching for a doctor specializing in this illness by looking at reference websites on hospitals. However, there was not much reliable information there. It took over six months before I met my doctor (Dr. Madarame.)

After all those years, I finally met my doctor, so it meant so much to me just to receive a correct diagnosis.

Conclusion |

Sadly, Kuma-san's case in this manga is very common among many ME/CFS patients.

I attended my cousin's wedding last November, and met with other relatives. I told them about ME/CFS, but none of them had even heard of it.

I do wish to raise awareness of this illness by writing blog articles, which can lead to further development on research into this illness. I hope that an increasing number of people can receive a correct diagnosis. I will keep writing blog articles on ME/CFS at my own pace.
